Director: Divyang Thakkar

Cast: Ranveer Singh, Shalini Pandey, Ratna Pathak Shah, Boman Irani

Rating: 2/5

Runtime: 2 hours

Storyline:

Meet Jayeshbhai (Ranveer) and Mudra (Shalini) – a subservient couple living with sexist, patriarchal, dominating in-laws Pruthvish (Boman Irani) and Jashoda (Ratna). Jayesh-Mudra have faced 6 abortions (delicately passed off as ‘miscarriages’) to cater to their family’s demand for a son, but they are yet to even share their 1st KISS!

While Jayeshbhai is a wife-lover in secret, he has to pretend to be a toxic, wife-beater to appease his macho father. But when he learns that Mudra is pregnant again with a girl, he is determined to let this child live.

A wacky plan ensues as Jayesh, Mudra and their 9-year old feisty daughter try to escape to Laadopur. Now, Laadopur is a town where female foeticide has drastically plummeted the female to male ratio. It is led by gentle-hearted, burly wrestlers who’re dying to have some female population grace their place.

Will Jayeshbhai and fam make their escape safely? Will he finally muster the courage to call out the patriarchal bullshit? Watch Jayeshbhai Jordaar to know….

What Do We Think:

Jayeshbhai Jordaar appears to be just as lacklustre as its promotions. It is too in-your-face in its social messaging.

Ranveer Singh has comic potential and brings the energy, but the weak script overwhelms the actor. His Gujarati accent is slightly off in some places.

Shalini Pandey plays the meek wife and doesn’t really have much to do apart from being helpless as the film’s major focus is on Ranveer. Boman Irani has quite a one-tone role as the misogynist family head.

Ratna Pathak Shah too has a limited scope to excel in this movie. Jia Vaidya, who plays Ranveer’s daughter, brings a hilarious, fresh vibe with her though.

Overall, Jayeshbhai Jordaar feels too preachy, cheesy and suffers from a weak storyline.

Hit Or Miss:

One-time watch, if you want to hit the theatres for a clean, family comedy.
