Rating: 3/5

Director: Shashank Khaitan

Cast: Vicky Kaushal, Kiara Advani, Bhumi Pednekar

Runtime: 2 hour 11 minutes

Storyline:

Govinda Waghmare (Vicky Kaushal) ke life ki ‘L’ lagi padi hai. Why, you ask? It all starts with his father, a married man who carries on with Govinda’s mother in spite of already having a family elsewhere.

Like father, like son, Govinda too is having an affair with Suku (Kiara) even though he has a hot (albeit abusive) wife Gauri (Bhumi) at home. Gauri demands 2 crores to finalize the divorce.

Meanwhile, his partner-in-crime, choreographer girlfriend Suku wants to get married ASAP. Govinda ke life ke jhamele khatam hi nai ho rahe – his sautela bhai is hellbent on screwing him over in the property dispute over the bungalow, which their father left in Govinda and his Mom’s name. His Mumma (Renuka Shahane) is a crafty old woman faking illness to gain sympathy.

Govinda also owes a hefty amount to the local policeman (apna Daya aka Dayanand Shetty). When Govinda steals cocaine from a politician’s rich brat to escape his money problems, a shocking murder and a nosy maid (Trupti Khamkar) might just land him and his girlfriend in jail!

What Do We Think:

There’s a surprise cameo of Ranbir Kapoor, having a very tongue-in-cheek face-off with Vicky Kaushal. Govinda Naam Mera is an entertaining ride from start to finish. It doesn’t take itself seriously and neither should you.

Vicky Kaushal has excellent comic timing and is having a lot of fun as Govinda. He plays the part with an easy breezy charm. Kiara Advani isn’t merely a pretty face, she carries off her part quite well – balancing the comedy and the paranoia of her character.

Bhumi Pednekar has limited screentime but still has a very arresting presence as the firecracker wife with a hidden soft side in this comedy. Would’ve loved to see more of her character. Viraj Ghelani as the shady insurance agent is hilarious af and Trupti Khamkar as the chuglikhor maid is equally funny.

The soundtrack is largely forgettable though. While Govinda Naam Mera doesn’t bring anything new to the table, it does a decent enough job of keeping you entertained. And it has a climax that is predictable but it does pay off.

Hit Or Miss:

It is a decently entertaining film if you’re in the mood for some fluff, timepass comedy! Streaming on Disney+Hotstar.
