Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway Based On A True Story:

Rani Mukerji’s next is based on a decade-old real story of a custody dispute that took the entire nation by storm.

Back in 2007, a geophysicist named Anurup Bhattacharya got married to Sagarika and migrated to Norway to start a new life. The couple had become parents to Avigyan (son) and Aishwarya (daughter).

In May 2011, the Norwegian Child Welfare Service took away the toddlers – 3-year-old Avigyan and 1-year-old Aishwarya. They had objected to the fact Sagarika would feed her kids by her own hands which they felt was ‘force-feeding’.

The authorities also had a problem with the kids sleeping on the same bed as their parents – a thing which is very common in Indian household.

They allegedly claimed that the kids didn’t have enough space to play and the couple provided ‘unsuitable’ clothes and toys to their kids.

Following a diplomatic dispute between Indian and Norway, the Norwegian authorities finally granted the kids’ custody to their father’s brother. They also allowed them to bring the children back to India.

However, it was not over for Sagarika as she was not on good terms with her husband by then. Nonetheless, she eventually got the custody of her kids after a legal battle.
