1) Kai Po Che! (2013)

SSR Movie – Kai Po Che

Sushant Singh Rajput made his Bollywood debut with a refreshing and natural performance in Kai Po Che! Directed by Abhishek Kapoor, the film was an adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s novel The 3 Mistakes of My Life.

Did you know SSR won the Best Male Debut at the Producers Guild Film Awards and Screen Awards for his Kai Po Che! role?

2) Shuddh Desi Romance (2013)

SSR Movie – Shuddh Desi Romance

SSR tried his hand at the romantic-comedy genre with Shuddh Desi Romance, co-starring Parineeti Chopra and Vaani Kapoor.

Did you know Shahid Kapoor was initially offered this project? But owing to date issues, he backed out and Sushant came in and rocked the movie as the commitment-phobic tourist guide!

3) PK (2014)

SSR Movie – PK

Did you know the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput didn’t charge anything for his role in PK? Yes, SSR worked for free for his small yet prominent role in the Aamir Khan-Anushka Sharma starrer.

It is said that director Rajkumar Hirani had handed him Rs 21 as a good luck sign and also sent him several books on cinematography as a return gift to the late actor from his own collection.

4) Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! (2015)

SSR Movie – Detective Byomkesh Bakshy

Directed by Dibakar Banerjee, SSR played the titular role in this mystery thriller which was based on detective Byomkesh Bakshi created by the Bengali writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. Though the film was appreciated by the critics, it, unfortunately, was a commercial failure.

Aamir Khan was offered the antagonist’s role in this movie but he turned it down in favour of Dhoom 3!

5) M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016)

SSR Movie – MS Dhoni

The MS Dhoni biopic proved to be a game-changer for Sushant Singh Rajput. It ended up being the fifth highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2016 with a ₹216 crore box office collection.

Did you know Mrs. Sakhshi Dhoni gave Kiara Advani her actual wedding dress for this movie’s wedding scene? Akshay Kumar had also shown an interest in headlining the biopic, but director Neeraj Pandey rejected him saying he didn’t look like the character.

SSR won in the Best Actor (Critics) category at the Screen Awards and Best Actor at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, for MS Dhoni.

6) Raabta (2017)

SSR Movie – Raabta

Rumours of SSR-Kriti Sanon dating were rife during the romantic action thriller Raabta. The film was also criticized for allegedly copying S.S. Rajamouli’s film, Magadheera.

Apparently, Alia Bhatt was signed opposite SSR for Raabta but she walked out in favour of doing KJO’s Shuddhi movie (which later got shelved).

7) Kedarnath (2018)

SSR Movie – Kedarnath

Sara Ali Khan made her debut with SSR’s Kedarnath movie. Sara-SSR briefly dated each other during this time and even went on a trip to Thailand together. Their real-life romance did translate into amazing onscreen chemistry!

As per reports,  the team had built a huge set worth 7 CRORES in Mumbai’s Film City to replicate the holy city and temple!

8) Sonchiriya (2019)

SSR Movie – Sonchiriya

SSR’s Sonchiriya movie received critical acclaim but sadly it tanked at the box office with a 10.42 crore collection.

To be completely immersed in the headspace for his role of an outlaw in Sonchiriya, Sushant stayed unwashed, unfed, unattended for days and weeks as part of his character preparation!

9) Chhichhore (2019)

SSR Movie – Chhichhore

Chhichhore marked SSR’s last theatrical release before his tragic demise in 2020. The coming-of-age comedy-drama featured an ensemble cast of Shraddha Kapoor, Varun Sharma, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Naveen Polishetty, Tushar Pandey and Saharsh Kumar Shukla.

It was a huge hit for SSR indeed. As per reports, the film’s college sequence is reportedly inspired by Hostel 3’s and Hostel 4’s real-life rivalry for the GC in IIT Bombay. 

10) Drive (2019)

SSR Movie – Drive

Drive was the SSR’s last film before he died …it, unfortunately, didn’t release in theatres but landed directly on OTT – Netflix.

As per reports, Karan Johar wasn’t happy with the output and the VFX. Even after reshooting, KJO was dissatisfied and hence was reluctant to release it in cinemas.

11) Dil Bechara (2020)

SSR Movie – Dil Bechara

Dil Bechara, which was the Hindi remake of  The Fault in Our Stars, was released posthumously on Disney + Hotstar.

Fun fact – director Director Mukesh Chhabra revealed that Dil Bechara’s Title Track was SSR’s swansong. Farah Khan charged nothing for choreographing it and Sushant nailed the dance song in ONE TAKE. Impressive, indeed.
