Salim first married Salma ( Born Sushila Charak) in 1964

they even had 4 kids together - Salman Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Sohail Khan and Alvira 

while married to salma, he fell in love with actor-dancer Helen

 from Kabli Khan to Don, their love blossomed and turned to marriage in 1981

salim's 2nd marriage without divorcing his 1st wife caused friction with the family

salim told his kids -  "I don’t expect you to love her as much as you love your mother, but I want you to give her the same respect'”

Over time, respect replaced resentment with Helen herself acknowledging the warmth she receives from the khan family
