6 Times Bollywood Films Inspired Horrific Real-Life Crimes!

Bollywood is a universe in itself with the variations of films that come out of this industry every year.

However, in some unfortunate circumstances, people have taken Bollywood a little too seriously. Here are 6 real-life crimes that have taken place after getting a little Bollywood inspiration.

1. Drishyam (2015)

34-year-old Suraj Harmalkar was arrested for allegedly killing his girlfriend Amita Mohite! The gruesome crime took place last year in October 2020, but it was only on January 14 that the Boisar Police managed to arrest him. Suraj was a married man and Amita had no clue that he had an estranged wife. In love, Amita pestered him to get married to her but in anger of the pressure put on him, Suraj strangled Amita and dumped her body in the bathroom loft.

Suraj had hidden his girlfriend’s body in the bathroom loft of his rented flat in Vangaon, Palghar and had constructed a wall with cement, mortar and anti-leak glue to prevent foul smell. He also paid the rents of the flat on time so that no one suspected anything.

2. Dhoom (2006)

Towards the ending in the first part of the Dhoom franchise, John Abraham’s biker gang steals the vault of a Goa casino. Inspired by this fictional incident, a four-membered criminal gang made the sequence a reality.

Four gang men robbed the Bank of Kerala by digging a hole in the floor of the strong room and stole over 80 KG of gold and Rs 5.5 lakh in cash. Upon getting caught, the gang leader also revealed getting this idea from the movie.

3. Bunty Aur Babli (2006)

As per a MensXP report, two con artists, a man named Jagjeet and his female partner, were wanted by the police for the attempt to murder, theft, robbery, snatching, and assault on an on-duty officer.

Apparently, these two were inspired by the Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukerji starrer Bunty Aur Babli where the two actors themselves play con artists. The real-life con artists’ operations were mostly limited to Delhi’s Connaught Place, Defence Colony, RK Puram and Tilak Marg and were involved in at least 23 cases.

While being interrogated, Jagjeet confessed that the inspiration behind these crimes came from the movie. As of 2017, Jagjeet has been imprisoned while his female partner is still on the loose.

4. Khosla Ka Ghosla! (2006)

In the movie, a property dealer used fake documents to acquire the land of a common, middle-class man. Although this was made for entertainment, that did not stop criminal mind Abhay Veer Batra repeating the film in real life.

Abhay Veer Batra was found running an operation of illegally occupying vacant land in Delhi and forging ownership documents.

5. Special 26 (2013)

The movie Special 26 was itself based on true incidents that had taken place in 1987, the Opera House Heist in Mumbai. Post the release of this film, a group of robbers approached a gold loan bank in Hyderabad, disguised as CBI officials.

The criminals approached the bank in the morning in a black Scorpio car. One of them was dressed as a street cop who announced the arrival of the CBI officers inside the bank and the rest of the goons said that they had intel that the bank was converting black money into gold after demonetisation. The gang left with 40 kilos of gold.

6. Darr (1993)

Dipti Sarna, a Snapdeal employee, was stalked for over a year by a man who reportedly is a certified psychopath. The incident took place in 2016. Dipti’s stalker first saw her at a metro station and gradually learned everything there was to know about her including what she wore, who she met and even what she liked to eat

Police said that while the abductor was a psycho who lived in a virtual reality, he did not want to harm Dipti but was looking to gain her attention and even proposed to her to get married. The morning following the abduction, he dropped her off safely at a police station as well.
