8 Iconic Films Starring The Late Dilip Kumar!

Veteran actor Dilip Kumar passed away at 7:30 am on Wednesday, 7 July 2021, at the age of 98.

In honour of the Tragedy King’s memory and legendary cinematic contribution, take a look at 8 of his most iconic films!

1. Jwar Bhata (1944)

Jwar Bhata is a 1944 black and white Indian drama film directed by Amiya Chakravarty. It marked the debut of Dilip Kumar and also featured Mridula Rani, Shamim Bano, Agha, Vikram Kapoor, K. N. Singh, Khalil, and Mumtaz Ali.

2. Mughal-e-Azam (1960)

This film is the legendary love story of Salim, an emperor’s son, who falls in love with a beautiful courtesan. Even though he is determined to be with her, his father decides to break them apart. Mughal-e-Azam is one of the greatest contributions to Indian cinema and the late Dilip-ji was in the lead along with late actress Madhubala. The film was directed by late director K. Asif.

3. Devdas (1955)

Directed by the late legend Bimal Roy, the story of Devdas talks about a childhood friendship that blossoms into love. But, his lady love Paro is forced to marry a rich zamindar when Devdas’s family disapproves of their relationship, turning him into a depressed alcoholic.

Along with Dilip Kumar, late actress Suchitra Sen is in the movie’s lead.

4. Ram Aur Shyam (1967)

Ram escapes from his home when he learns that his abusive brother-in-law plans to kill him. Justice is meted out when Shyam, Ram’s long-lost twin, accidentally takes his place. The film is directed by late writer-director Tapi Chanakya and starred Dilip Kumar, Waheeda Rehman and Mumtaz.

5. Madhumati (1958)

Another wonderful Bimal Roy directorial, the film Madhumati is about a man named Deven, who takes shelter in a mansion when a landslide blocks his route to the railway station. He finds the mansion eerily familiar and soon learns about the story of his previous birth.

Dilip-ji and Vyjayanthimala made one of Bollywood’s favourite pairings with this film.

6. Ganga Jamuna (1961)

After Ganga and Jumna’s mother passes away, Ganga works for her ex-employer while Jumna goes to the city to become a police officer. His first assignment involves confronting his convict brother.

Directed by late director Nitin Bose, this is another film starring Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala. Along with them, late actor Nasir Khan was also a part of the trio lead.

7. Shakti (1982)

Ashwini, an honest policeman, refuses to trade a captured gangster for his son Vijay’s release after a ruthless gangster kidnaps him. Vijay grows up resenting his father and turns to a life of crime.

This Ramesh Sippy directorial sees many legends in action. The leads were Dilip-ji, Amitabh Bachchan, the late Amrish Puri and Rakhee Gulzar.

8. Mashaal (1984)

Mashaal is an action film where the character Vinod Kumar, an honest man, tries to expose the ills of society through his newspaper, Mashaal. His wife meets Raja, who has led a tragic life and tries to help him become an honest journalist.

Directed by the late Yash Chopra, the film stars Dilip-ji, Anil Kapoor and Rati Agnihotri in the leads.
