Festivals play an important part in storylines. Today, let’s take a look at 6 B-Town films that used Dussehra/ Vijaya Dashami celebrations as a plot.
1. Kahaani
The climax of Vidya Balan starrer ‘Kahaani’ was shot on ‘Dashami’ (10th day) of Durga Puja, where married women participate in ‘Sindoor Khela’. The major chunk of the movie was shot in Kolkata.
2. Rang De Basanti
Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, ‘Rang De Basanti’ had a Dussehra celebrations scene in the film. In one of the pre-Independence sequences, freedom fighter Chandrashekhar Azad (played by Aamir Khan), is seen confronting a traitor while being trapped by the British police. During the Raavan Dahan scene, Azad escapes as the burning effigy crumbles down.
3. Bajrangi Bhaijaan
During the first half of the Kabir Khan directorial- ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan can be seen with a couple of children preparing for Raavan Dahan & Ramleela. In the song ‘Tu Chahiye’, people are shown celebrating ‘Dussehra’.
4. Ram-Leela
Starring Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, Dussehra celebrations played a significant part in the climax of ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela’. In the climax, Ram & Leela kill each other while everyone is celebrating Ramleela and burning the effigy of Raavan.
5. Ra. One
Shah Rukh Khan, Arjun Rampal, and Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer film ‘Ra. One’ had a Dussehra scene, right before the interval. During the scene, the antagonist Ra. One (Arjun’s character) watches the effigy of a Raavan burn.
6. Fan
Yes, another SRK film- ‘Fan’– used the ‘Dussehra’ celebrations sequence as a plot. The background of the climax scene- where Aryan Khanna impersonated Gaurav Chandna at the local talent show- was of celebrating Ramleela before Raavan Dahan.
