Salim Khan first married Salma Khan in 1964 after a five-year courtship. Born Sushila Charak, she took the name Salma after marriage. Together, they built a family with four children – Salman Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Sohail Khan and Alvira Khan Agnihotri. Later, the family also adopted Arpita Khan Sharma, whom Salim found as an infant on a Mumbai street and lovingly raised as his own.
Years into his marriage, Salim’s life took an unexpected turn when he fell in love with actor-dancer Helen. What makes this story stand out is not secrecy, but honesty. Salim once said,
“It wasn’t that I was unhappy with my marriage, so I remarried Helen. Salma was the first person I told that I was in love with Helen.”
He met Helen on the sets of Kabli Khan, and their bond grew stronger during Don. Looking back, Salim described it simply as
“an emotional accident.”
He married Helen in 1981 without divorcing Salma, a decision that caused deep pain and resistance within the family at first. Salman Khan had later shared how difficult that phase was, saying,
“Dad explained to us that he still loved Mom and that he’ll always be around. it took us some time to really accept Helen aunty. Today she’s a part of our family.”
Over time, respect replaced resentment. Helen herself acknowledged the warmth she receives, saying,
“They don’t have to care for me or love me or anything, but the respect and the love I get is unbelievable.”
Today, the Khan household stands as a rare example of emotional maturity, where dignity comes before labels. As Salim Khan summed it up best,
“I’m lucky to have two wives who live in harmony.”
In an industry full of drama, Salim Khan’s story proves even the most complicated relationships can turn into something quietly beautiful.
