Long before headlines and debates, there was simply a quiet connection. Salim was already married to Salma Khan and had four children when he fell in love with Helen, one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic performers. The decision was far from easy. Salim has admitted that his children were initially resistant, something he had expected.
With time, however, emotions settled. Today, his children, Salman Khan, Sohail, Arbaaz, and Alvira, share a relationship of mutual respect with Helen.
The duo first met in 1963 with Kabli Khan, where Helen played the heroine and Salim the villain. Ironically, they barely spoke then. Years later, destiny reunited them during Don, the same film that gave Helen her legendary number Yeh Mera Dil.
Salim recalled their growing closeness simply – “After the day’s shooting, Helen would come over, and we would have a drink together, and then she would leave.”
Even Salim struggles to define the moment love began.
“I won’t be able to say when exactly I fell in love with her… After seeing her for quite a long time we decided to honour our relationship. We got married in 1981.”
For Helen, the journey was emotionally heavier.
“The fact that Salim was a married man did disturb me and I did felt guilty in the beginning… I respected him tremendously as he tried to help me out without trying to exploit me.”
When it came to his children, Salim chose honesty. He told them he had another person in his life and asked only that she be given the same respect as their mother.
“I could have just been with Helen… but my religion sanctioned me to marry again. I wanted to give her status. That’s why I married her.”
Salim Khan Health Update:
After being hospitalised, Salim Khan is currently under the care of Dr. Jalil Parkar at Lilavati Hospital. He is stable and being closely monitored.
