Bollywood Music & Trends

When asked to name that one trend he doesn’t like in the industry, Amaal says it’s the fact that remixes of original songs are made. That trend is now slowly depleting and it’s on its way out in a year or two. In the past I’ve stated I have no problem with remixes. It’s the volume. If there are a 100 songs, 80 remixes and 20 originals is a bad ratio for a culture of music that has had legends do such great work.

He continues, It just shows poorly on us and it’s not to blame just the composers. Its very limited from my end. I might have 6 originals in the year and I’ll do 2 remixes.

Comparing songs, he says, If there is an ‘Aankh Maare’ which is a very good remix, there is a ‘Masakali’ which didn’t level up to the original. It’s okay, once in a while to do a remix but it is no fun.

Take On Artists

Hindi music I would say is our independent pop. People like Prateek Kuhad, Darshan Raval or Badshah, all of them are doing their own music on their own, not thinking whether we have to cross a certain barrier. But we are standing up in our own country, we have our own indie-pop which is growing and glowing,” Malik states.

K-pop & Amaal Mallik!

We also asked Amaal his views on K-pop to which he had an excited response! “We are becoming that music with people from other countries are looking at. I saw videos where a lot of Korean producers were listening to ‘Suraj Duba Hai’ and vibing to it. So we are managing to make that dent into their world how they’re making it into ours. So it’s good, the more the merrier. I would love to someday collaborate with a K-pop artist. It would be crazy fun!”

BTS: How Its Fans, ARMY, Could Change the Music Industry - Variety

Amaal also admits to listening to a lot of K-pop! He says, “I listen to a lot of it, I listen to a lot of K-pop’s newer artists also. Not just BTS. I think a lot of respect should be given to them for their music production. The kind of sound and the kind of pop dynamic that they’ve created for themselves, I think that is something we as Indians maybe should not adapt, but at least learn from that. They have their own sound, they don’t sound like Euro pop or US pop, they have their own sound. They’re not trying to follow a trend. They’re creating their own trend. I think that’s really awesome!
