Storyline

Shardul (Rajkummar Rao), a gay police officer who isn’t out of the closet yet faces the typical Asian ‘Shaadi Kab Kar Rahe Ho’ stereotype. On his quest to get his joint family off his back, Shardul approaches Sumi (Bhumi Pednekar), a lesbian who has the same issues as him. After a long chase, Shardul finally gets Sumi to agree on marrying him and it would naturally be a lavender marriage. The two move to police quarters not too long after their ‘big day’ but it’s a riskier location to reside in with eyes on them all the time.

Amidst this arrangement, Sumi meets Rimjhim (Chum Darang), a doctor at the hospital she had gone to deliver her father’s feces sample for a health test. This hilarious encounter ends up with them getting into a relationship. While Sumi is adjusting to her new love, Shardul has a mean breakup but fret not, the love of his life is on the way. However, the main pressure of marriage begins when both the families start demanding for a grandchild. Though Shardul and Sumi do not cave, they settle for adoption but not without having to cross some of the biggest ‘coming out’ hurdles!

What do we think?

Badhaai Do is an amazingly put and well-thought of story with a narration that hits an empathetic viewer right in the feels. Rajkummar Rao represents every man, stone cold on the outside but cotton-candy soft on the inside, who is unable to express the sexual preference because of society and familial obligations. Rao has not one awkward moment in the whole film, clearly showcasing the perfectionist in him. He’s made his character look flawless and we couldn’t help but fall in love.

Bhumi Pednekar has her character’s personality down to the very way she talks to the way she expresses love. The little moments where she’s fixing her hair before meeting Rimjhim and the way she walks past Shardul without so much as a second glance speaks more than enough. As amazing she is as an actress, we enjoyed watching her in a never seen before role, one played to win hearts. An additional mention goes to Chum Darang, the gorgeous model turned actress who plays Rimjhim. She’s as cheerful as day and oh boy, if anyone looked at us with the loving jealousy she looks at Sumi with, we’d melt into the floor.

Hit or Miss?

Badhaai Do is definitely a BIG HIT for us! And as for rewatching the film, a hundred percent yes!
