Ayushmann Khurrana-starrer medical campus comedy-drama, Doctor G, delivers a good message without being preachy.

Storyline:
“Jo cheez mere paas hai hi nahi, uska ilaaj kaise karoon?” Dr. Uday Gupta (played by Ayushmann Khurrana) hilariously struggles in an all-female class of Gynaecology in Bhopal. He aspires to specialize in Orthopaedic, but ends up in the stree-rog vibhag at the town’s government medical college, which is still better better than ‘tatti-peshaab’ (Pathology) as per Uday’s mom Shobha (played by Sheeba Chadha).
His orthopaedic cousin Ashok (played by Indraneil Sengupta), who also happens to be his role model, asks him to take up gynaecology and keep trying to get a better rank next year so that he can try for orthopaedics again.
As the only man in the gynaecology department, Uday gets ragged by his seniors during his initial days, however, he eventually befriends Dr. Fatima Siddiqui (played by Rakul Preet Singh). Things get complicated when Uday falls for Fatima who is already taken and will soon get engaged.
Uday’s lack of interest in the department – failing to complete menial tasks, his immaturity and his misogynistic attitude – get him into a tiff with the HOD of the gynaecology department, Dr Nandini Srivastava (played by Shefali Shah). And that’s where his true education – from losing his ‘male touch’ to learning to ‘listen to women’ – actually starts.
Will he change his department, or will the department change him? From desperately trying to find an exit route from the gynecology department to how Uday forms a love-love relationship and learns life lessons is basically the crux of the story.
What Do We Think?
First things first, Sheeba Chadha and Shefali Shah are the SHEROES of this movie. Sheeba Chadha adds weight to the movie with her impeccable acting in the 2nd half. Shefali Shah as strict, no-nonsense Nandini is effortless, but her character becomes bit bland towards the climax.
Ayushmann – the undisputed poster boy of the unconventional films – slips into his character like a pro. His character Uday Gupta is not likeable in some scenes but relatable for sure. Khurrana, as usual, does a great job. Rakul plays her part well. But, her character is almost forgotten in the last 30 minutes as she had nothing impactful to bring to the table.

Special mention to Uday’s friend Chaddi (played by Abhay Mishra). His scenes with Ayushmann will make you laugh. The other characters lend a decent support.
Things take a dramatic-360 degree turn in the second half. Post-interval, Doctor G is emotional, sensitive and heartwarming. Director Anubhuti Kashyap took a comedy route to break gender stereotypes and address relevant subjects. The music, which doesn’t do much for the movie is forgettable the moment you leave the theatre.
Hit Or Miss?
Despite a few misses, Doctor G is a watchable movie. Overall, it’s a HIT for its noble message.
