Today marks the 154th birth anniversary of ‘The Father of the Nation’, Mahatma Gandhi. As the nation remembers our Bapu today, we bring a list of 5 Indian actors who portrayed Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on big screens.

1) Dilip Prabhavalkar

Dilip Prabhavalkar as Gandhi Ji

Dilip Prabhavalkar‘s portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi in Lage Raho Munna Bhai was one of the highlights of the film. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the Munna Bhai sequel starred Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Vidya Balan, Boman Irani in key roles.

2) Naseeruddin Shah

Naseeruddin Shah aced the role of Gandhi Ji in Hey Ram. Directed by Kamal Haasan, the period crime drama was based on India’s partition and the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi by Nathuram Godse. The film also starred Kamal Haasan, Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji among others.

3) Annu Kapoor

Annu Kapoor as Gandhi Ji

The veteran actor, Annu Kapoor had won hearts with his portrayal of Gandhi Ji in the National Award-winning film, Sardar (1993). The biographical drama was based on the life of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Directed by Ketan Mehta, the titular role was played by Paresh Rawal.

4) Rajit Kapur

Rajit Kapur as Gandhi Ji

Rajit Kapur – known for his roles in films like Raazi, Baar Baar Dekho to name a few – was seen as the younger Gandhi Ji in Shyam Benegal’s movie The Making of the Mahatma for which he had bagged the National Award for ‘Best Actor’.

The movie depicted the early life of Mahatma Gandhi when he was an Indian-based barrister. Gandhi ji was invited to South Africa in 1893 to settle a case for a wealthy Indian settled there. He expected to return in a few months but instead got involved in the freedom movement and eventually stayed for 21 years.

5) Darshan Jariwala

Darshan Jariwala as Gandhi Ji

The versatile actor Darshan Jariwala had won the National Award in the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ category for his incredible portrayal of Gandhi Ji in the Feroz Abbas Khan directorial Gandhi, My Father (2007).
