Storyline
Ganga (Alia Bhatt) is a young and beautiful woman coming from a rich social background whose only mistake was that she fell in love. Betrayed by the person she runs away from home to become an actress, Ganga is sold off into a prostitution ring at Kamathipura. The initial years run by with abuse and forced torture until she finally snaps one day, changing her name to Gangu. In an attempt to start a better life despite being a prostitute, Gangu slowly develops an armour of steel and is unbreakable.
After the death of Gangu’s prostitution ring’s house lady, she takes over and helps the other girls live in a happier environment. However, with power comes great responsibility as we very well know. Gangu becomes Gangubai Kathiawadi, a name she wears proudly like a badge. Further on is the journey of a mere 27-year-old house lady who tries not only to keep her prostitution ring happy and alive but also who earns respect for their services. She also fights for educational rights for the girls growing up under her roof.
What Do We Think?
Knowing the prodigy Sanjay Leela Bhansali is, expectations were already high to levels unreachable. And we’re not disappointed, Bhansali has done a job so fantastic it only restores the belief that he truly is one of Bollywood’s finest directors till date. A Bhansali film is bound to have exceptional music, lightings and an unmatched vibe that Gangubai Kathiawadi expresses without a doubt.
The film has got to be one of Alia Bhatt’s best works and we feel her energy is unmatched. The actress has clearly outdone herself and the result is fabulous. From the start to the finish, all eyes were glued on the screen and this isn’t coming from just an observation but instead from a fact. Bhatt has not only perfected the speach but also from the way the character Gangubai sits to the way a single tear trickles down her cheek despite keeping a stoic face.

We have to admit, 2022 is off to a banger start and with a release such as this, it’s a big HIT!
