Storyline

Mumbai Saga (inspired by true incidents) tells us the story of a commoner who found his way into ruling all of Mumbai. Amartya Rao (John Abraham) was a man of justice and honour who couldn’t stand wrongdoings. From making sure his brother Arjun (Prateik Babbar) gets an education to protecting his wife Seema (Kajal Aggarwal), Amartya rose to fame in the underworld and political sphere. With fame, he got the power he always wanted to become unbeatable. Alas, every such story also has its own opposition. Here, that one such opposition happened to be an inspector named Vijar Savarkar (Emraan Hashmi).

In a constant brawl to grab the other’s throat, both the parties end up with a killing streak which of course, has its own mishaps. Eventually, Inspector Vijay and Amartya come face to face and fight each other in a battle of pride and anger.

Good Gangster-Bad Cop or Bad Gangster-Good Cop?

The ruling of the underworld over Mumbai isn’t an unheard story. Amartya Rao did all he could for his family who came first to him in every situation. With his might, he overcame not just one or two much many hurdles on the way to his throne. However, although bad, many lives were lost in the process. Amartya was a good man, always thoughtful and kind to those who showed him respect. Naturally, he broke bones if anyone attempted to hurt his loved ones. The power he sought was simply out of determination to eradicate the foul minds involved in the gangland and corrupted political world.

Encounter specialist Inspector Vijay on the other hand clearly had deep-rooted underworld connections which helped him reach his endgame. Hunting Amartya down was his only motive and his success or failure in it would play a major role in shaping the future of the underworld’s hierarchy. However, he too succumbed to the use of unorthodox methods in order to gain victory. So the real question here is, who must be considered the real gangster? Of course, if you ask us, we think it’s the cop. But a penny for your thought wouldn’t hurt. Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Acting

John Abraham, being the handsome hunk he always is, definitely grabbed our attention. The movie portrayed the two separate entities (cops and ganglords) in a perfect differentiation. Sanjay Gupta’s direction here is commendable with the movie demonstrating the perfect balance of good and evil sides of the world. Emraan Hashmi took on the role of a serious yet proud policeman and did very well with it.

Prateik Babbar, though given limited screen time, also did justice to his role by acting as the perfect little brother who turned rogue for his bhaiiya. As Amartya’s wingman Baba (Rohit Roy) says, “Tune beta nahi, baap paida kia hai”, the film gives us enough insight on why this statement is definitely true for the brother duo.

Apart from the leads, we feel Rohit Roy and his character has been extremely supportive to the entire film. Without Baba in the picture, the impact of just how powerful the underworld can be wouldn’t be prominent. We’d definitely award him the ‘Perfect Wingman’ trophy.
