The legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar has passed away today at the age of 92.
As per reports, Lata ji had suffered a multi-organ failure last night. May her soul rest in peace!
From National Awards, Bharat Ratna to the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the Nightingale of India was bestowed with numerous accolades.
However, did you know late Lata ji was once POISONED? The incident apparently made her bed-ridden for months and it was also rumoured that she had lost her voice because of it. In a throwback interview, she had revealed –
“In 1962, I fell very ill for about three months. I thought I would never be able to sing again. One day, I woke up feeling very uneasy in my stomach. And then I started throwing up — it was terrible, the vomit was a greenish colour. The doctor came and even brought an X-ray machine home because I could not move. He X-rayed my stomach and said I was being slowly poisoned.“
Who was behind this nefarious scheme? While it was never known who was the mastermind behind this sabotage, there were suspicions. Late Lata ji had said – “We had a servant in the house who made the food. Usha went straight into the kitchen and told everyone that from that moment on, she would do the cooking instead. The servant sneaked off without telling anyone and without collecting any pay. So we thought someone had planted him there. We didn’t know who it was. I was bed-ridden for three months and was so weak!”
While the legend had confirmed the poisoning rumours, she had refuted reports of losing her voice.
“There is a myth created around my slow poisoning. No doctor told me I won’t be able to sing. In fact, our family doctor Dr R P Kapoor who cured me said he was determined to see me back on my feet. But let me clear the misunderstanding propagated over the years, I didn’t lose my voice.”
