Ek Villain Returns Movie Review; Ek Villain Ruined By Having ANEK?

Sequel to the 2014 film Ek Villain, Mohit Suri’s Ek Villain Returns is a misogynistic mess that seems to be more like a Milap Zaveri musical.

Ek Villain
Ek Villain

As an avid fan of Ek Villain, this sequel is very disappointing. While the former hit all the sweet spots – excellent soundtrack, engaging screenplay, action and performances, along with a strong emotional core…the latter misses the mark by a long shot! Ek Villain Returns ruined by having Anek!

Storyline –

Petty AF, rich bad boi brat Gautam Mehra (Arjun) always has to have the last word. Marna manzoor hai usse, harna nai. He’s the type to gatecrash his ex’s wedding to create a scene and stick it to the groom that ‘teri bandi meri hi rahegi’.

Gautam locks horns with Aarvi Malhotra (Tara) an aspiring singer who becomes viral after she makes a Yashraj Mukhate-style edit of Gautam’s wedding breakdown. In typical fuckboi style, Gautam gets her to fall in love with him and then leaves her heart-broken.

On the other side, we have the dysfunctional couple Disha Patani-John Abraham. Now, Disha’s sweet-faced Rasika Mapuskar can be a prime Pyaar Ka Punchnama candidate. A gold-digger salesgirl who’s stringing along her obsessed taxi driver stalker Bhairav Purohit (John Abraham). Iss Majnu taxiwale ko ‘Rating zaroor dena’. (This line is nowhere near as iconic as Riteish’s Apko Shikayat ka mauka nahi milega)

Everyone’s engaged in the game of Bad, Badder, Baddest… Sinister smiley masks are aplenty. A serial killer, fancying themselves as the messiah of unrequited lovers, is on the loose.

And oh, there’s also a Fight Club-esque element to the film. There’s a Tiger in this Disha Patani film, who wasn’t harmed in the making…rather it was kept ….very well-fed. *giggle*

What Do We Think:

The Good

A riveting soundtrack is a must for a Mohit Suri film. The music of the 1st part remains superior, but Dil shines in an otherwise forgettable album. (Tara has also sung the song Shaamat)

There’s a Goodachari-ish (hi Adivi Sesh fans) stunt that looks quite cool. The gals Tara and Disha look glamorous AF. But that’s about it.

The Bad

The sequel cast hasn’t touched the level of Riteish’s sinister act in Ek Villain, nor the desperation of Siddharth’s character or the wholesome innocence of Shraddha’s.

A strong emotional connect is missing this time, aggravated by a flimsy, disjointed and unintentionally funny plot. Tara Sutaria gets the short end of the stick here in this ensemble cast. As they say… too many cooks spoil the broth.

The intensity of Sid-Riteish’s face-off is also absent in John vs Arjun’s fight. John seems to be stuck in the Satyamev Jayate 2 Zone of stiff acting, and Arjun’s not channelling the angst with conviction.

Overall Disha has a meaty, smouldering role but she fake giggles her way through it, butchering the Marathi accent too. JD Chakrvarthy is wasted in this role.

Ek Villain Returns ends on a bizarre note but you might wanna stick around for Riteish Deshmukh. *wink*

Hit Or Miss:

This one’s a miss. Binge-watch the first part instead.
