Rating: 2.5/5

Duration: 2 Hours 1 Min

Storyline:

Ayaan Kapoor (played by Sidharth Malhotra) is an egoistic real estate broker who is under huge debt and needs to sell his lavish bungalow to repay it. As he fails to crack a lucrative deal, Ayaan often takes out his stress on his police officer-wife Ruhi Kapoor (played by Rakul Preet Singh). On his daughter’s birthday, while Ayaan rushes to a meeting with a prospective client, he meets with a car accident.

Thank God Movie Review

Ayaan – full of confusion and sins – reaches to “Yamlok” where Chitragupt aka CG (played by Ajay Devgn) offers him to play ‘the game of life’. If he manages to win, he will be sent back to earth and if he loses, he will be sent to hell.

Stuck somewhere in between life and death, Ayaan is made to play CG’s version of KBC (Kaun Banega Crorepati), which is based on Ayaan’s weaknesses – anger, greed, jealousy, delusion, envy, lust and pride.

What happens next? Ayaan’s encounter with CG makes him realize certain things but will it change him for good?

What Do We Think?

Inspired by the 2009 Norwegian film called Sorte Kugler, Sidharth Malhotra & Ajay Devgn’s Thank God is decent watch despite its hatke concept.

While the first half makes you feel lil bit bored, the 2nd half somehow manages to hold your attention. Ajay Devgn’s salt-and-pepper look as modern Chitragupt is a treat to watch. He is hilarious and his expressions are spot on. After the blockbuster success of Shershaah, Sidharth does a good job in this quirky entertainer. Ajay and Sidharth’s funny banter will make you laugh out loud.

Thank God Movie Review

Rakul Preet Singh doesn’t have anything substantial to offer. She lends a decent support with her limited screen time. Senior actors Seema Pahwa and Kanwaljit Singh as Ayaan’s parents are convincing but it seemed like a wasted opportunity. I wish they had more scenes.

While the idea is fascinating, director Indra Kumar failed to execute it properly. He presented Yamdoot and Chitragupt in a modern way because it’s the age of Amazon Prime, not Doordarshan.

Thank God Movie Review

The slice-of-life comedy film manages to make you laugh but only in bits and pieces. It’s a clean entertainer that is not vulgar and is not full of sexist jokes. The VFX team could have done a better job as the the CGI appears to be gimmicky in most parts.

Meanwhile, the songs – “Manike”, “Dil De Diya Hai” and “Haaniya Ve” – work for the movie.

Hit Or Miss?

Thank god for the star performers as they are the ONLY thing that will keep you engrossed. Otherwise the movie falls flat. Overall, Thank God is a miss at the theatres, unless you’re a looking for a light-hearted entertainer to kill your time.
