Satyaprem aka Sattu (Kartik) is a happy-go-lucky, virgin guy eager to be rid of his bachelorhood. He bickers endearingly with his family to get him married off.

Things fall into place for Sattu when his longtime crush Katha (Kiara) agrees to marry him. However, there is something clearly haunting Katha, as is evident from her glum face during the cheerful festivities.

Satyaprem Ki Katha is a sweet and beautiful love story, handling tough topics like sexual assault and asexuality with remarkable grace and sensitivity.

While the trailer appears to be flamboyant and flippant, the movie itself takes the issue seriously and is filled with heartfelt sentiments of caring, respect and love. It’s a rather refreshing role for Kartik Aaryan to play too…given that he has been synonymous with quite misogynistic characters in the past. But no, here’s he’s big on drinking the ‘respect women’ juice, and we love that for him!

The 1st half goes by breezily with entertaining family banter, vibrant songs and a hilarious Kartik Aaryan bemoaning his ‘virgin’ status. Some parts may feel like filler fluff to the viewer but given the nature of what Kiara’s character suffers, the slow burn pace complements the narrative… giving appropriate space to the female lead’s dilemma. The film ends on a hopeful yet slightly bittersweet note.

Kartik is high on energy when required, has good comic timing and he’s a sweetheart in the emotional scenes. The way Satyaprem’s character has been etched out is totally endearing – filled with loyalty, empathy, self-sacrifice and giving ultimate support to his spouse. Kartik balances both sides very well here.

But performance-wise, Kiara gets the lion’s share of the credit! She has been given an incredibly layered character to play – someone who can be vivacious one moment, but aloof, distraught, and traumatized the next. Kiara captures all the nuances well and gives a heart-wrenching performance. In the emotional scenes, she exceeds Kartik. There’s a particular sequence showing her having a panic attack and it feels very authentic.

Kiara-Kartik’s chemistry is good too…. way better than Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2... because here there’s a substantial depth given to their relationship. Supriya Pathak and Gajraj Rao amp up the relatability factor in the movie and are a great supporting cast.

The soundtrack of Satyaprem Ki Katha is enchanting (barring the Pasoori remake, an odd addition to the otherwise original album) – especially the soulful Aaj Ke Baad and Naseeb Se.

Overall, Satyaprem Ki Katha is a heartfelt tale of love, trauma, acceptance, respect and resilience. It is high on emotions with a mix of family fun and drama. It has got to be one of Kartik’s most emotionally mature characters. And one of Kiara’s best performances!

Hit Or Miss:

A sweet love story that deserves to be enjoyed on the big screen!
