Fresh newlyweds Deepak (Sparsh Shrivastava) and Phool (Nitanshi Goel) are ready to start their married life. The train that this doe-eyed duo boards to return to Deepak’s village is packed with similar young, married couples.

In a moment of chaotic hilarity, Deepak ends up leaving the train at night with the wrong bride, draped in a similar ghoonghat. While Phool is panicking back at the station, Deepak is stumped to see that the girl he has brought home is someone else. This new girl, Jaya, pretends to pose as Pushpa Rani (Pratibha Ranta) in front of Deepak’s family.

On the other hand, the naive Phool meets the stern but kind-hearted Manju Maai (Chhaya Kadam), a tea-stall owner, who gives her hope in her darkest moment.

Laapataa Ladies directed by Kiran Rao

This Kiran Rao directorial is a feel-good, sincere and pure film. Set in 2001, Laapataa Ladies carries a simple, rural charm. It is a delightful mix of social drama and comedy.

The basic premise had the potential to turn sinister – a young, clueless newly-wed bride left stranded at a train station. A conniving woman infiltrating an unsuspecting house.

But Kiran Rao steers clear of that route and focuses on keeping the film quite wholesome and idealistic. She weaves a subtle social satire, infused with wry, tongue-in-cheek humour. Laapataa Ladies has this perfectly authentic, small-town flavour, made all the more convincing by its stellar young cast who have nailed the dialect. Kiran Rao makes the film light-hearted with endearing yet compelling characters and stops short of being preachy.

Coming to the cast – Laapataa Ladies has been superbly acted! The fresh, young promising actors hit all the right notes with their performances. Sparsh Shrivastava is convincing as the confused but earnest male protagonist searching for his lost wife.

Nitanshi Goel as the doe-eyed bride is dripping with innocence and wins you over with her vulnerable yet charming act. Pratibha Ranta gets the meatiest part of them all and is absolutely amazing and natural in her role! She plays the layered character with incredible finesse and sincerity. Pratibha stands out the most in this already solid cast. A very talented performer indeed!

Seasoned actor Chhaya Kadam is impeccable and owns her tough, no-nonsense role completely. Ravi Kishan brings the house down with his hilarious one-liners.

Overall, Laapataa Ladies is a perfect, family-friendly, feel-good film!
