In an honest and emotional chat with Instant Bollywood, Armaan shared the lesser-known story of his family’s hardships, a time when everything seemed to fall apart, and two young brothers had to rise up to keep things going.
Armaan’s father, Daboo Malik, was a composer who worked during the late 90s and early 2000s. However, things didn’t take off for him the way they did for his brother, composer Anu Malik.

Armaan admitted that while his dad had some success, he couldn’t really make a strong mark in the industry. He recalled a difficult moment from his childhood when his father came home one day and said he didn’t think he could continue making music anymore. That moment stayed with Armaan.
“There was this one moment when Dad came home and told both of us, ‘I don’t think I’ll be able to continue in music anymore’. That was a huge deal for him to say, as a father, to actually admit that. After that, he said he couldn’t keep going,” Armaan said.

When 10 Year-Old Armaan Malik And 15-Year Old Amaal Stepped Up To Support Their Family During Hardships
Armaan was just 10 at the time, and his brother Amaal was 15. Their grandfather had passed away around that time too, and everything seemed to happen all at once. With no projects and no money coming in, it was a tough phase for the family. Armaan shared that his father had tried various paths — from acting to singing — before focusing on composing, but nothing quite worked out.
“Suddenly everything just stopped. There was no business, no incoming money, and it didn’t even seem like anything was coming up,” he said. “I think Dad just gave up. He was tired and exhausted from trying and trying.”
That’s when Armaan and Amaal knew they had to do something. They were still teenagers, but they decided to step up for the family. Amaal began helping music composers and took up small programming projects. Armaan, already doing jingles and recordings, continued to sing wherever he could.
“We felt like we need to step up and do something for the family,” Armaan shared. “Basically, whatever money we could bring home, that’s what we did.”
Their mother also took on her share of responsibility. She started giving tuitions in accounts, maths, and economics to neighbors and friends to contribute in any way she could.
“We had to hustle hard to keep things going,” Armaan added.
Today, Armaan and Amaal are among the most talented names in the Indian music scene. But their success was not handed to them. It came from those early struggles, the courage to take on responsibility far too early, and a family that stayed strong through it all.
