EXCLUSIVE: “Being Middle-Class Is My Superpower” – Says Genelia Deshmukh
You might know her as the bubbly actress from Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na or as the charming face from several hit films across different languages. But did you know acting was never part of Genelia’s plan?
“I didn’t want to be an actor. It just wasn’t a career option,” she shared. “I was in college; someone picked me up from there. It wasn’t something I set out to do – it just happened. I had a lot of support, and I think my middle-class upbringing is my superpower. I honestly feel that.”
That one honest line says so much. For Genelia, growing up in a middle-class family didn’t just shape her values, it became her strength. She didn’t come from a world of glam and glitter.

“I’m Not Trying To Act That, I’ve Lived My Whole Life Being That” – Genelia
“When you’re middle class, you know the value of money, the value of an opportunity, the value of people being nice—or not. You know what it means to work hard,” she explained.
She added, “Being middle class is my superpower. I understand how a normal middle-class girl would behave. I’m not trying to act that—I’ve lived my whole life being that.”
And it shows. There’s an authenticity in her performances, in her smile, in the way she carries herself even today. In a world where celebrities often try to look larger than life, Genelia is refreshingly grounded.
