In an exclusive chat with Instant Bollywood, Ali opened up about how he got that memorable role and what it was like being part of a film that defined a generation. Turns out, it was good old theatre that opened the door. Ali shared –
“I think someone saw me in a play. By then, I had already started doing stage work. I think someone spotted me in a play – Mrunmayee Lagoo. She was working with Raju sir. So maybe she saw me, or Raju sir did. They called me for an audition. And then I got the part.”
Talk about right place, right time. And more importantly, the right talent.

3 Idiots Was A Very Well-Made Film – Ali Fazal
Although Joy Lobo didn’t get a lot of screen time, his storyline left a strong impact. A student crushed by pressure and expectations, his arc was one of the most emotional in the film. People still remember him in that tole, even after all these years.

To which Ali humbly said,
“it was a very well-made film. A brilliant film. Sometimes you have great parts, but if the film itself isn’t good, it gets lost.”
Fair point. A great role can only shine when the film supports it. 3 Idiots gave Ali just the platform to make a lasting impression.
Ali’s short but strong appearance in 3 Idiots was only the beginning. Since then, he’s gone on to do everything from rom-coms to action thrillers to international projects. But for fans, Joy Lobo will always have a special place. Headphones on, guitar in hand, quietly fighting against the system in his own way.
