EXCLUSIVE: Ali Fazal Calls Rani Mukerji’s Aiyyaa ‘Futuristic’ And ‘Way Ahead of Its Time’

In an exclusive conversation with Instant Bollywood, Ali Fazal got candid about movies that either didn’t perform well or were simply misunderstood. And guess which film he believes was way ahead of its time? None other than Rani Mukerji’s Aiyyaa.

Yes, Aiyyaa. The quirky, colourful, and often misunderstood romantic drama starring Rani Mukerji and Prithviraj Sukumaran.

“Sometimes you have great parts, but if the film itself isn’t good, it gets lost. I was just talking yesterday about this film called Aiyyaa (starring Rani Mukerji, Prithviraj). I think it’s brilliant. I think it was way ahead of its time. I thought it was a very twisted film. It was quite futuristic. Incredible performances. They did great work.”

Ali’s take on Aiyyaa really shows that he got what the film was trying to do beneath all the wild songs and trippy visuals. When it came out back in 2012, people weren’t quite sure what to make of it. Between the over-the-top sequences, dreamy aesthetics, and bold themes, it just felt like a lot. But now, looking back (and let’s be honest, with audiences who live for meme-worthy moments), Aiyyaa is finally getting the love it deserves. It was weird, fearless, and totally one of a kind, and that’s exactly why it’s so memorable.

Ali Fazal Thinks Milan Talkies Could Have Been Better

Switching gears, Ali was also asked about a film of his that didn’t do well but maybe deserved more love. While he didn’t call it ‘underrated’ outright, he did have something honest to say about Milan Talkies, his 2019 film with Tigmanshu Dhulia.

“I feel some films could’ve been made differently. For instance, Milan Talkies by Tigmanshu Dhulia. I learned a lot from working with him. I think I owe him a lot. That film didn’t do well. It flopped. I feel like if it had been handled a bit more thoughtfully, it could’ve turned out well.”
