So, what kept him away? Two words- martial arts.
“I trained under Sensei, in an old form of martial arts, Okinawan Goju-Ryu,” he shared. “There, we were taught that strength, both mental and physical, is when you can stay away from things that attract others.”

That early training taught him the kind of discipline most of us only dream of. Fame, attention, endless temptation… none of it fazed him. His focus was clear.
“So whether it was alcohol, cigarettes, partying too hard or too much, drugs, anything that was substance abuse, it never worked for me.”
Suniel says sports also helped shape that focus. He was a sports captain and described himself as an obsessive sportsman. He knew success in sports required the right mindset, which meant steering clear of distractions.
Suniel Shetty On His Learnings From Gurus & The Beauty Of Indian Culture
Even when surrounded by glamour and unlimited access to anything he could want, he wasn’t tempted. “My mindset wasn’t like that,” he said. “I learned from Gurus. And when you learn from Gurus, you learn a lot.”
He also credits Indian culture and values for helping him stay grounded. “That’s the beauty of India, when you learn from your culture, from your roots, there are many things you never forget.”
His philosophy is simple yet powerful- “If something never even enters your mind, it won’t matter that you never tried it. Because it was never right for me. And if it’s not right for me, I don’t even believe in it.”
In a world full of peer pressure and fast choices, Suniel Shetty proves that real strength is sometimes about saying a quiet but firm ‘no.’
