EXCLUSIVE: “I Decided To Consciously Stop Working In TV, For 2 Years” – Mrunal Thakur On Switching From TV To Films

“I had to consciously stop working for almost two years,” Mrunal revealed, speaking about the time she decided to step away from television to pursue her Bollywood dreams.
It wasn’t an easy decision, especially when everyone around her thought she was doing great on TV. But Mrunal knew that if she wanted to be taken seriously as a film actor, something had to change.
“There was that stereotype,” she explained. “People didn’t want to cast TV actors.”
Even now, she says, there are incredible actors doing brilliantly on OTT platforms who still struggle to break into films. And while talent and hustle are crucial, Mrunal believes luck plays a pretty big role too. “Of course. Luck is everything. But to be honest, it’s also about the choices you make.”

That meant turning down roles, losing income, and waiting patiently… something not everyone can afford to do. “Sometimes actors tell me, ‘We can’t wait; we have to run a kitchen.’” And honestly? That’s a very real, very relatable truth.
“Sometimes You Have To Lose A Lot Of Work Because It Resonates With Past Character” – Mrunal Thakur
But the tides are slowly turning. With the OTT boom, the lines between TV, film, and digital content are starting to blur. “So many actors are finally getting their due, and I celebrate it like a personal victory,” she says with a smile. “It feels really good when someone from television gets a good opportunity to headline a show.”
Her takeaway is clear – be brave enough to say no, even when the phone is ringing off the hook. “Sometimes, you have to lose a lot of work because it resonates too closely with your previous character,” she explains.
