Satish Shah Dies At 74; The Sarabhai vs Sarabhai Actor Had Kidney Failure
Veteran actor Satish Shah, best known for his comic timing and iconic roles in television and films, passed away today at the age of 74 due to kidney failure.
The actor’s health reportedly worsened while he was at home, after which he was rushed to Hinduja Hospital. He breathed his last around 2:30 pm.
Born on June 25, 1951, in Bombay, Satish Shah came from a Kutchi Gujarati family. A graduate of St. Xavier’s College, he later pursued acting at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. He was also an alumnus of the National School of Drama (NSD), one of India’s most prestigious acting institutes.

Shah began his film career in 1978 with Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastaan, but his big break came with the cult classic Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983), where he played the unforgettable role of Municipal Commissioner D’Mello. Over the years, he appeared in more than 250 films, including hits like Hum Saath Saath Hain, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, and Om Shanti Om.
On television, Shah became a household name with the 1984 sitcom Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, where he impressed audiences by playing a new character in every episode. But it was Sarabhai vs Sarabhai (2004) that truly made him unforgettable. His portrayal of Indravadhan Sarabhai, the witty and sarcastic patriarch, became one of Indian TV’s most loved characters. His onscreen chemistry with Ratna Pathak Shah was adored by viewers.
Apart from acting, Satish Shah also served as a judge on Comedy Circus and was a member of the FTII Society in 2015. He was married to designer Madhu Shah.
Satish Shah’s passing leaves behind a huge void in Indian entertainment. His humor, warmth, and unforgettable characters will continue to make audiences smile for generations to come.
