Ali was participating in a triple jump event. For the first time, he and his team were given spikes, the special running shoes with studs. “At that time, spikes had just been introduced for us. I had some practice, but not much,” he said.

With excitement and a rush of adrenaline, Ali decided to give it his all. During the trial jump, he attempted a technique called ‘cycling in the air’ which, if done well, helps boost the length of the jump.
But things didn’t go as planned. “So in the first trial jump, the spikes dug into me,” he said, gesturing toward his knee. “And spikes are really sharp. Even now I have three marks. People think some lion clawed me.”
Yes, you read that correctly. People genuinely assume he was attacked by a wild animal. But the truth is far more grounded. It was just a young Ali Fazal, a pair of new spikes, and an ambitious jump.
Most would have quit right there. But not Ali. Driven by adrenaline and sheer determination, he went ahead and gave the final jump everything he had. And it paid off. “I came second,” he said with a smile. “So that was something.”
That moment, for him, remains more than just a memory. It is a reminder of the core principle sports taught him. You fall, you get up. Then you do it all over again.
