During a brutally honest chat on the podcast Relationshit Advice, Shanaya opened up about the scariest relationship experience of her life. At the time, she was on a dreamy foreign vacation with her then-boyfriend. Romance and the perfect vibes. Or so she thought.
One night, as they were heading out for dinner, Shanaya’s phone ran out of battery. She borrowed her boyfriend’s phone to book a cab. That is when things spiralled. A message notification from his ex-girlfriend popped up. She opened it. Inappropriate texts. She scrolled some more. Another chat appeared. And another. And another.

“The second girl popped up, the third girl, the fourth, the fifth. There were five girls he was messaging,” she said.
Yes. Five.
Shaken and heartbroken, Shanaya did what most of us would do. She took screenshots and sent them to her closest friends, including her bestie Ananya Panday, who was actually nearby on her own overseas trip.
Ananya immediately told her to ditch everything and come stay with her. Shanaya panicked, unsure how to just walk out of the situation, especially with dinner plans looming. So she sat through the entire evening pretending everything was perfectly normal.
For the next three days, Shanaya kept up appearances. Her boyfriend eventually sensed something was wrong and tried to fix things by surprising her with an expensive pair of earrings, which Shanaya dubbed as ‘guilty earrings’.
When confronted, her boyfriend defended himself by saying it was only messaging and nothing physical. Shanaya shut that down instantly. Emotional cheating was still cheating, and she walked away.
The ironic twist? She still owns the earrings and even wears them occasionally.
