Ram Janmabhoom-Babri Masjid case: Attorney General KK Venugopal refused contempt plea against Swara Bhaskar

Attorney General K K Venugopal has refused to give permission to an advocate to file a plea against Bollywood actress Swara Bhaskar. The plea is in relation to Swara Bhaskar’s alleged belittling statements against the Supreme Court over the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case verdict.

The Attorney General refused consent for initiating criminal contempt of court proceedings.

As per a report by DNA, lawyer Anuj Saxena had sought consent from the court in the case. On the 21st of August, General K K Venugopal stated in a letter to Anuj Saxena that the statements by Swara Bhaskar appear to be factual and it was in the perception of the speaker.

In the letter, Swara’s statement read, We are living in a country where the Supreme Court states that the demolition of the Babri Masjid was unlawful and, in the same judgment, rewards the same people who brought down the mosque. Bhaskar had said this on February 1st this year at a panel discussion.

Venugopal’s letter stated that he did not think what Swara was saying had any criminal contempt. In my opinion, this statement does not constitute criminal contempt. I do not think that this is a case where the offence of scandalising the court or lowering the authority of the court would arise. I, therefore, decline consent to initiate contempt proceedings against Swara Bhaskar.”
