Screenwriter, lyricist and political activist Javed Akhtar has hit the headlines for a troubling reason recently.
An FIR has been filed against Akhtar over his remarks allegedly comparing Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to Taliban.
After the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan, many celebs had shared their two cents about the situation. In an interview with NDTV, Javed had drawn parallels between Taliban and Hindu extremists – commenting that the right-wing everywhere want the same things.
Akhtar had said – “The right-wing across the world want same things. Just like Taliban want an Islamic State, there are those who want a Hindu Rashtra. These people are of the same mindset – be it Muslim, Christian, Jews or Hindus. This is kind of a dress-rehearsal for becoming like full-fledged Taliban.”
He had further commented, “Of course, the Taliban is barbaric, and their actions are reprehensible, but those supporting the RSS, VHP and Bajrang Dal are all the same. This country is basically a secular country. The idea of Taliban can’t appeal to an Indian.”
His statement had triggered a controversy and BJP workers had even staged a protest outside Akhtar’s house following the interview. As per Economic Times, now an FIR has been registered at Mulund police station based on a complaint filed by lawyer Santosh Dubey.
“The FIR has been registered under Indian Penal Code Section 500 (punishment for defamation),” an official revealed.
