After the grand success of Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story, the makers are back with yet another bang – Scam 2003 – The Telgi Story. The much-anticipated trailer was dropped recently.

Based on India’s biggest stamp paper scam and the man behind it, Abdul Karim Telgi, the series features veteran theatre artist Gagan Dev Riar in the lead role.

Helmed by Hansal Mehta, Scam 2003 – The Telgi Story is directed by Tushar Hiranandani and produced by Applause entertainment in association with Studio NEXT.

The trailer opens with the introduction of Telgi and showcases his journey to becoming the mastermind behind one of the most ingenious scams in India with plenty of scene-stealing moments.

In the trailer, Gagan is seen saying dialogues like “Agar desh ki arth vyavastha Kuber ka khazana hai toh stamp paper uski chabi” (If the nation’s economy is Kuber’s treasure, then a stamp paper is its key) and “Jis din aapne saamne wale ki zaroorat samajh li, samajh lo uss din aapne dhandha samajh lia” (The day you’re able to gauge the other person’s problem, consider that you’ve learnt how to do business) among others.

The signature theme music of Scam 1992 also kicks in the background, composed by Achint Thakkar.

The second part of the Scam franchise has been adapted from the Hindi book ‘Reporter Ki Diary’ by journalist-news reported Sanjay Singh, who broke the scam back then.

Abdul Karim Telgi

Born in Khanapur, Karnataka, Abdul Karim Telgi was responsible for Rs 30,000 crore stamp paper scam. He had bought machines to print fake stamp papers and hired over 300 people who later went on to deceive banks and insurance companies.

On 28 June 2007, Telgi was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 13 years for another aspect of the scandal. He had passed away in 2017 at a hospital in Bengaluru. He was reportedly suffering from meningitis along with diabetes, hypertension.
