Jawan Movie Review – Another Shah Rukh Khan Blockbuster?

Jawan Movie Review; Another Shah Rukh Khan Blockbuster in the making?

It’s a thoroughly entertaining masala actioner from start to finish, and SRK continues to be in excellent form. But granted its commercial masala pitch, Jawan seems to favour style over substance. The heavy-handed melodrama makes the emotional impact seem shallow.

Rating: 3.5/5

Jawan Movie Review:

SRK Double role in Jawan
SRK Double role in Jawan

Jawan is a truly entertaining, massy masala actioner through and through. After Pathaan, the 57-year-old Shah Rukh Khan is still in top form in this Atlee directorial. The hella stylish, high-octane action sequences are seeti-worthy and Atlee creates a thoroughly immersive package! It is not without its flaws though.

Granted its commercial masala pitch, Jawan seems to favour style over substance. The action overpowers the emotional element. It tackles various issues and the systemic rot of corruption and just stops short of being preachy. But still the emotions are presented with some OTT melodrama, making its impact shallow.

Jawan Movie Review:

That being said, the action is a total VIBE. The sleek, beautiful slo-mo shots seem like poetry at moments. The indulgence of slow-motion in the action sequences gets repetitive after a while but the fast pacing of the plot will keep one engrossed.

Shah Rukh Khan is magnetic in Jawan, flitting about with utter swag. Ironically, the older version of SRK looks hotter and younger than when he’s playing the son. He carries off the double role with effortless grace and is badass in the stunt sequences, not missing a beat. His monologue at the end is a bit of an overkill though.

Individually, Nayanthara is arresting, sassy and confident in her part but her romantic chemistry with SRK is lacklustre sadly. Her equation with SRK is sizzling only when they are playing the cat-and-mouse game and engaging in mortal hand-to-hand combat! Their face-off fight scene before the interval is one of the best moments of the movie.

Deepika Padukone in Jawan still
Deepika Padukone in Jawan still

Romance-wise Deepika Padukone is better suited with SRK. She leaves her mark despite her limited screen time as a cameo role. Vijay Sethupathi feels criminally underutilized in Jawan. His character could have been more substantial than being such a typical villain. But his sheer screen presence makes up for the underwritten part. Sanjay Dutt’s cameo is an absolute hoot and seems to have won over the audience!

SRK is aptly complemented by his girl gang comprising of Sanya Malhotra, Priyamani, Girija Oak and more. Their backstories make for some compelling emotional moments, though it is fraught with heavy-handed melodrama.

The BGM music by Anirudh Ravichander is absolutely killer and hype… and it elevates the scene to another level (half the enthusiasm is boosted by the instrumental music itself). But apart from the Zinda Banda dance anthem, other tracks seem quite generic.

Hit Or Miss:

On its way to become another blockbuster success for Shah Rukh Khan! This massy action spectacle is meant to be enjoyed in theatres with friends and family as you hoot enthusiastically at the screen!
