But in a plot twist no one saw coming, the actor recently found himself surrendering at Tihar Jail owing to legal trouble regarding a ₹9 crore cheque bounce case!
The trouble began way back in 2010, when Rajpal took a ₹5 crore loan from Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to produce and direct his film Ata Pata Laapata. Sadly, the film flopped hard.
When the project failed and he couldn’t repay the money, several post-dated cheques he issued bounced, leading to prosecution under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act. In April 2018, a Delhi magistrate court convicted Rajpal Yadav and his wife, sentencing them to six months in jail. The actor challenged the verdict, filing appeals that dragged on for years.
Meanwhile, over the years, the outstanding debt ballooned to around ₹9 crore with interest and penalties. In 2024, the Delhi High Court suspended his jail term and gave him time to repay. His lawyer assured the court that payments would be arranged. By October 2025, Rajpal managed to deposit ₹75 lakh, but the bulk of the amount remained unpaid.

Finally, in February 2026, the court had enough. No more extensions. No special treatment. The High Court ordered Rajpal to surrender immediately.
While surrendering, a visibly emotional Rajpal said, “Sir, kya karoon? Mere paas paise nahin hain. Aur koi upaay nahin dikhta… Sir, yahan hum sab akele hain. There are no friends. I have to deal with this crisis on my own.”
It’s a sobering reminder that in real life, even Bollywood’s funniest faces don’t get a happy ending written in advance.
