Konkana Sen Sharma has been vocal in expressing her concern against UP’s ‘Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act’.
She was among the 1,500 signatories in an open letter against ‘Love Jihad Law’ to the National Human Rights Commission of India!
In conversation with Pinkvilla, the actress spoke up against this controversial law, slamming it as ‘unconstitutional and regressive’. She argued that women should be allowed to have their religious freedom and choose their own partners.
“I am very against this love jihad law. I feel it’s an unconstitutional law because in our country, in this democracy, we have the right… we are granted religious freedom. So, if you are saying that women can vote, then it follows naturally that women can also choose their own partners and women can choose their own fate,” Konkona told Pinkvilla.
Elaborating further, she said – “Every community is important in its own way and every community has its place within our country. But there is some integration between communities, that is a beautiful thing. I think it is very unconstitutional and a very regressive law, like the UAPA.”
The charming and versatile actress will next be seen in Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi, which will hit the theatres this New Year. The dramedy is directed by Seema Pahwa and it also stars Naseeruddin Shah, Supriya Pathak, Vinay Pathak, Vikrant Massey, Parambrata Chattopadhyay, Ninad Kamat and Seema Pahwa’s husband, Manoj Pahwa.
The story revolves around a middle-class North-Indian family that comes together for 13 days to perform the ‘tehrvi’ function after the head of the family (Naseeruddin Shah) passes away.
