Storyline

Loosely inspired by true events from the life of the famous and disputable Indian stockbroker Harshad Mehta, The Big Bull seems to follow an act of what could’ve happened. The story is that of Hemant Shah (Abhishek Bachchan), a stockbroker who is the epitome of ‘rags to riches’. He is married to Priya Patel Shah (Nikita Dutta) and the two of them embark on a crooked journey owing to Hemant’s greed to reach the top.

While Hemant makes his way through the stock market by means of deception and fraud, a smart reporter named Meera Rao (Ileana D’Cruz) catches onto his plans soon. So goes on the infamous tale of how financial crimes taking place from 1980 to 1990 made one man so rich, that he thinks, ‘Bhagwaan se bhi zyada paisa hai humare paas’.

What Do We Think?

The story of Harshad Mehta isn’t an easy one to portray and The Big Bull isn’t the first attempt! The 2020 drama series ‘Scam 1992’ demonstrated the life story of the notorious stockbroker with ease giving the audience the exact amount of intensity and curiosity needed to keep one going while watching a series.

Sadly, The Big Bull failed to provide the viewer with such vehemence to sit through the two hours.

The story doesn’t seem to convey all the true events as mentioned in the initial description. It rather fictionalizes the life of Harshad and it has turned into a completely new story of a man, Hemant. The change of names was to protect the identity of the real people however, the film seems to have changed more than just the names.

Desh toh gareeb tha hi, shaayad uski soch bhi gareeb thi‘, is what is mostly observed throughout the whole ordeal. Abhishek Bachchan proves just how easy it is to get away with practically anything, the only necessity in such a case remains wealth.

Hit or Miss?

The Big Bull has barely managed to scrape the great movie bar. As a one time watch, we recommend it. However, if you really wish you know more of Harsha Mehta’s real story, we suggest you watch ‘Scam 1992’.
