Rating: 2/5

Director: Satram Ramani

Cast: Sonakshi Sinha, Huma Qureshi, Zaheer Iqbal and Mahat Raghavendra

Running time: 2h 8m

Storyline:

Rajshree Trivedi (Huma Qureshi) aspires to be a sports presenter. The ambitious, small town girl from Meerut is hell-bent on proving her mettle, spurred on by her mother’s constant nagging about marriage.

Come back with the job or get married without a fuss – threatens the 30-something Rajshree’s mother.

On the other hand, we have uber chic Sonakshi Sinha as Saira Khanna. She is all set to launch her fashion brand and even gets approval for a travelogue shoot in London. But things come crashing down when she finds out her buff Chad boyfriend has been using her for clout and cheating on her.

Meanwhile, Rajshree has been turned away from the sports presenter job without so much as an audition, owing to her appearance. Devastated by their personal crisis, both the girls cross each other’s path and bond together over their mutual problem.

The plus-sized ladies then set off to London, determined to complete the travelogue shoot and in the process find self-acceptance. The gals are accompanied by Zoravar (Zaheer) an enthusiastic line producer who’s always hyping them up and Srikanth (Raghvendra) a perpetually-stoned camera man, who’s equally chill in life.

What Do We Think:

Double XL’s messaging on fat-shaming is just too in-your-face and preachy. The generic plot and mediocre execution fail to draw one in.

The songs are quite forgettable too. Sonakshi Sinha appears to be trying too hard and her character still leaves you wanting something substantial. Huma Qureshi performance feels more empathetic but she is wasted in this half-baked story.

Zaheer’s Zoravar is charming on paper but on screen becomes a huge irritation with the annoying catchphrase ‘Zo, Za, Zu’. Take a shot everytime he says this! In comparison, Mahat Raghavendra comes across as oddly charming in his high AF avatar. Take a shot everytime he whips out his weed joint!

Overall, Double XL makes for a tedious and preachy watch rather than being feel-good and sensitive.

Hit Or Miss:

This one is a miss in the theatres unless you’re a hardcore Huma Qureshi fan.
